Oswestry is a border market town

Award winning street markets, indoor market and independent shops. Settled right on the Welsh border, Oswestry has celebrated being a market town for over 800 years. Take a break from the city and enjoy small town shopping. Friendly shopkeepers, award winning independent shops and a thriving market will all welcome you. The street market is on Wednesday and Saturday and the indoor market is open Friday too. Come to the Artisans’ market and late night opening with music and food on the last Friday each month.

Oswestry's great outdoors in spring. As the days grow longer and spring beckons, a walking break in Oswestry’s borderlands is a perfect way to blow away the cobwebs. Snowdrops will soon be in flower and clear winter days bring awesome panoramas across both Shropshire and North Wales. Don't miss the wonderful snowdrop walks at Chirk Castle in February. Take a walk up to Old Oswestry, the iron age hillfort for some of the best views or for more gentle vistas wander around Ellesmere. With its nine meres, we call this Shropshire's Lake District.

Oswestry's borderland history

Wild borderland battles from centuries past have left a legacy of wonderful history just waiting to be explored. The World Heritage Site of Pontcysyllte and Chirk Aqueducts sits right on the border near Oswestry. The charming semi ruined Whittington Castle is the centre piece of that village and National Trust properties, Chirk Castle, Powis Castle and Erddig are all within easy reach. For a spring break, follow remains of the Industrial Revolution at places like Llanymynech Limeworks and create a fascinating tour of the borders following railways and canals.
