What’s on near here?
Oswestry museums, arts and events – the word “eclectic” could have been coined for Oswestry’s arts scene. There is such a variety of live music, visual and dramatic arts on show. Add the Oswestry Hot Air Balloon Carnival in August and we’ll be ready to challenge you not to find an event you will want to attend!
Borderland Visual Arts group keep the exhibitions flowing throughout the year at galleries such as the Qube, Willow Gallery, and the Library.
Visit Oswestry Town Museum for the story of the town and then onto The Cambrian Heritage Railway Museum to find more about Oswestry’s industrial past. For a different experience, don’t miss Andrew Logan’s Museum of sculpture at Berriew.
Films, plays and musicals are regular hits on the calendar. Don’t miss a visit to the new Holroyd Community Theatre or our independent cinema, Kinokulture.
Literature abounds too with war poet and soldier Wilfred Owen and author Barbara Pym both born in the town. Follow the Wilfred Owen Trail around town to get a sense of his upbringing and family history.
All genres of music are well-served with several excellent local choirs and orchestras. The Whittington International Chamber Music Festival has a stunning six day programme of top notch classical musicians and performances each May. Summer music is international and eclectic – visit Cae Glas Park in the centre of Oswestry for free Summer Concerts in the band stand. It could be a local brass band or maybe a vinyl showcase or Bulgarian dancers. July brings The International Music and Dance Eisteddfod in Llangollen.
At the Oswestry Food & Drink Festival, the town streets come alive for two days and are filled with stalls selling a world of flavours. August is home to Oswestry Show, one of the country’s oldest and largest agricultural shows, and Shrewsbury Flower Show follows later in the month.
Oswestry streets are Christmas streets in early December. The Christmas Parade is a carnival of Christmas floats and Friday Night Christmas Live is one of the year’s highlights. It’s a great night of show ground rides, live music, food producers and fabulous fireworks right in the centre of town.
Around the county there is lots more to enjoy – checkout Shropshire Festivals for everything from a Kids special festival to the mighty Oktober Beer Fest.
Arts & crafts, culture and more – Oswestry and the Welsh Borderlands are “Fest Fabulous”.
